The 1940 Census Is Almost Here!

Like many genealogists I am eagerly waiting for the release of the 1940 US census record on 2 Apr 2012.  Who will I find among its pages?  What new nuggets of family history will I discover?

While I am waiting, I am visiting the 1940 Census website to learn more about this particular record. Some of what I have learned so far:

  • The 1940 census will be released by NARA as free digital images.
  • Directions given to the enumerators can be found here.
  • Questions were asked about a person’s income as well as where they had lived 5 years prior.
  • 5% of respondents received supplemental questions.  This was a first for the census records. Among the supplemental information requested was the respondent’s usual occupation, how many times a woman had been married, and the birth place of parents. I think we are all hoping our ancestors were asked the supplemental questions.
